Volvo XC90 Overview

Volvo XC90 will be locally assembled in India. The Volvo brand has finally announced that it will be commencing its Indian assembly operations. The assembly plant will be in Karnataka, and from what we understand this will be closer to the Volvo bus facility or the same one also. We reckon with this sure it will surely mean a reduction in its pricing as the duty will a reduction in the duty. Volvo has at the moment announced that the XC90 will be localised assembled.

Volvo XC90 Look

The second-gen Volvo XC90 is a far cry from its predecessor as far as styling is concerned. Sure, the SUV is still recognizable as a Volvo product, but the new styling is a huge step forward from the XC90 we’re all familiar with. Up front, not even an inch reminds us for the first-gen model. The front fascia has been completely redesigned, now incorporating a new, modern grille and slender headlamps fitted with “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running LED lights. And while the headlights are sharper and narrower, the grille is also taller and extends into the apron. The bumper, now integrated into the one-piece front fascia, carries a different air dam configuration with one large inlet flanked by two vents highlighted by chrome trims. Down below, two additional, smaller inlets round off the lower apron. The hood has also been reshaped, with muscular creases enhancing the vehicle’s powerful character.

Around back, Volvo kept the XC90’s traditional taillights that run along the tailgate’s height. However, the units have been redesigned to embrace the tailgate’s center section. The tailgate itself features a more intricate design that blends in perfectly with the new taillights. The revised bumper boasts a refined design and incorporates a dual exhaust configuration, hinting that Volvo has focused on ditching the XC90’s bulky appearance.

The second-gen SUV looks a lot more familiar from the side, although it appears the Swedes have spend a lot of time in gifting it with a more pronounced beltline. With the revised wheel arches also comes a new character line, which sits above the side sills when compared to the previous model. The glass area changed only slightly, but the new chrome trim and blacked-out pillars showcase a crisper, luxurious look.

Volvo XC90 Comfort

When you have a vehicle that costs so much, you always expect the interiors to be top-notch when it comes to quality, ease of use, comfort, features and so on. The Volvo XC90 fails to disappoint in this matter. The insides of this big SUV are very luxurious. Carrying forward the neat design of the exteriors, the interiors too have a simple yet premium layout. The dashboard has a pleasant design and one thing that we noticed at the very beginning is that the centre console has hardly any buttons. Usually, there are tons of buttons on luxury vehicles that make everything feel very complicated, but the XC90 has minimal use of buttons. Some people might argue that a touchscreen robs away the feel that actual buttons provide, and I too felt the same initially. However, the large infotainment system with its 9-inch screen and Sensus OS is quite a breeze to use.

The infotainment system has a lot of options for entertainment, navigation, vehicle settings, seat positions, driving modes, etc. that you could just play around with it all day long. The lower part of the screen has the AC controls. Since parking such a huge SUV can be a task, especially in our crowded cities, there is a reverse camera that provides a clear view of the derriere in the display in a crisp manner. It has two options – Park In and Park Out along with three modes – Lines, PAS and Zoom. Talking about the dashboard and other trims, you notice that Volvo has made use of leather and wood in much abundance. There are three leather options to choose from – Black, Blonde and Beige. There is a metal knob that is used to start the car and that part gets a sweet diamond finish.

Earlier we mentioned about the large windows and now we mention it again. Thanks to the large glass area and also the huge panoramic sunroof, the cabin feels very airy and has a lot of feel-good factor about it. The driver enjoys great visibility all around. Volvo has taken inputs from orthopaedic doctors for designing the front seats and they are extremely comfortable. The middle row gets reclinable contoured seats. The seats get a cooling as well as a heating function which works well. Space in the middle row is very good and it also boasts of a two-zone climate control system which can be controlled using the touchscreen (there is also a laptop charger). Full-sized adults can sit comfortably at the centre in the middle row but Volvo has also installed a platform for kids which raises the seat when a kid is seating, which is good for safety and also gives the child a better view of outside. The third row seats are large in size and accommodating enough although not for long distances. Boot space is decent with all rows in place and massive when the last row of seats are folded down.

A special mention goes to the Bowers and Wilkins audio system that comes in the Inscription variant. This 19-speaker audio system sounds so awesome that it can easily give you an eargasm. It has a lot of settings to play around with and honestly this is the best car audio system I’ve ever heard. I would buy the car for this system alone! Volvo has paid a lot of attention to detail. When you unlock the vehicle, the height of the vehicle decreases by a small amount and the car lowers itself to allow you to get inside easily. Once seated and doors closed, the car again raises itself to the normal level. The boot also has a button that allows you to lower the rear portion of the car by 50 mm so that luggage can be put inside easily. The XC90 gets a waterproof key as a spare. It does not have any buttons and can be worn around the neck with the help of the lanyard.

Volvo XC90 Transmission

The Volvo XC90 has a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine beneath, which churns out 223 BHP of peak power and 450Nm of torque. While the figures do not look as exciting as some of the competition, this vehicle offers many a things beyond just performance. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with an All Wheel Drive. The XC90 may not be a scorcher, but is no slouch either. The power delivery is linear and very refined. Infact, this large SUV doesn’t make its size felt while driving and handles well too. The XC90 has a brilliant ride and will appeal to those looking for luxury and comfort over performance. Volvo has clearly positioned itself away from the race and comes across as exclusive.

The XC90 in India gets the air ride suspension as standard fitment across all the variants. The air ride suspension has four modes – eco, comfort, off-road and performance and switching from comfort to performance mode stiffens the suspensions and has late gear shifts. There is noticeable thud over sharp ditches which maybe due to the 20 inch wheels. However, it rides smoothly at higher speeds over bad roads. The steering is extremely light and easy to use and weighs up at higher speeds. The XC90 is pretty easy to maneuver in tight spaces as well. Volvo XC90 Riding

The Volvo XC90 in India will get the air ride suspension as a standard fitment across all the variants. The air ride suspension offers four modes, eco, comfort, off-road and performance. The difference in ride quality when you cycle though the modes of course is very noticeable. Where the XC90 feels really wafty and comfortable in comfort mode you can immediately feel everything stiffen up when you switch to the more performance-oriented setting. There is though a noticeable thump that the XC90 lets through when you go over a sharp pot hole but strangely the thumping seems to be much less when take the same rough section at higher speeds. However, as mentioned, the car does feel a little uncomfortable traversing rough road sections especially when paired with the huge 20-inch wheels. All said and done though, the ride quality on any normal road is pretty impressive both in the front and in the middle row, which for a car like the XC90 is of utmost importance.

The Volvo XC90 gets an electric power steering setup and although it is extremely light and easy to use, it does take a little away from steering feel. But again, as we have mentioned earlier, Volvo’s have never been about performance and we prefer the direction they have taken for the XC90 too. The steering does feel really light and despite its size, the XC90 is very easy to turn around or maneuver in tight spaces. Although we haven’t really had the chance to test its high speed handling characteristics, at lower speeds and through the twisty mountain roads that we drove the car on, it did feel really sorted. Braking too seems adequate enough but the pedal does lack feel and tends to get spongy when the car is pushed to its limits.

Volvo XC90 Safety

The 2017 Volvo XC90’s standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and anti-whiplash front seats. Also standard are a rearview camera, frontal collision warning (including pedestrian/cyclist protection) and automatic braking for front-crash mitigation. The new XC90 also debuts what Volvo calls Run-off Road Protection, whereby if the vehicle goes off the road, the seat belts automatically tighten up and the seat cushions absorb impact energy if the vehicle comes down hard on its suspension. The Volvo On Call service includes emergency assistance, remote door locking and unlocking, automatic collision notification and stolen vehicle location.Safety options include a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and intervention, and a child booster seat built into the center position of the second row.

Volvo XC90 Final Word

The XC90 is already off to a good start. Volvo’s Gothenburg plant in Sweden is running a third shift to cater to global demand and The brand has seen plenty of success here too. Volvo says it already has 266 pre-delivery bookings in India. The Swedish carmaker seems to have finally got it right with the XC90. As a package it is brilliant, and is competitively priced as well at Rs 77.90 lakh for the top-spec inscription trim. As things stand, the XC90 offers a lot of bang for your buck, and as an overall package it seems to hold a lot of promise. The diesel engine is a delight, the interiors are probably the best seen on any luxury SUV, also the car is nice, easy and effortless to drive. The cabin has a modern air to it and the Inscription version offers quite a decent value too; especially considering the equipment on off
