Volvo XC60 Overview
The Volvo XC60 has been around since 2008 and was updated for the 2014 model year. Nine years after its introduction to the market, Volvo decided it was time to usher in a new generation, and usher one in they did. The new-gen model comes complete with a new design inside and out, new safety systems that include steer assist and oncoming lane mitigation, and a new “CleanZone” climate control system that is said to remove harmful pollutants from the air outside of the cabin when the ventilation system is functioning. Volvo will offer the new XC60 with its T8 hybrid powertrain, the D4 and D5 diesel powertrains, and the T5 and T6 gasoline powertrains for a power range that stretches between 190 horsepower and as much as 407 horsepower. In the right configuration, this SUV can hit 62 mph in 5.3 seconds.

Volvo XC60 Style
The new XC60 has been conceived using the same design language as the XC90, the S90 and more recently, the V90. Naturally, it has the same basic design cues – clean, simple lines and striking details – as these other models. That said, the XC60 has a few distinctive bits.
The now familiar T-shaped daytime running lights in the headlamps, for instance, extend right to the edge of the front grille. The doors also have a heavily sculpted lower section, while the pronounced ridge that runs from above the rear door handle helps give the XC60 a broader stance. Also, the vertically stacked taillights seem to have been inspired by the old car, but they are significantly sharper looking and superbly detailed. All in all, the new XC60 expresses a lot through its design and despite the same design theme as other Volvos; it is distinct and looks different compared to the bigger XC90.
Usually get into the driver’s seat first, of any new car, but this time around, things were different. As our car waited in the hotel lobby, I went towards the boot with my bag and simply opened it by moving my foot below the tail gate. Neat feature, no? As the large 505-litres boot gulped down my small bag, I couldn’t help but lift up the spare wheel cover to check out how things are arranged. The space saver spare tyre can be used for speeds up to 80 km/hr but what I found interesting was the placement of two air cylinders on either side of the spare wheel, neat!
Now jumped into the rear seat which is so nicely designed and well-sculpted, it is almost art! Support for the back and thighs is brilliant and the seats are placed at just the right height, allowing you a good view out of the window. While head room and shoulder space are good, knee room is quite limited and tall passengers will hardly have any space between their knees and the front seat unless the front seat is pushed far ahead. Other than that, no disappointments. While you do get the conventional AC vents at the rear, Volvo has also fitted additional vents on the B-pillars.
The front seats are again super, good in size, excellent in comfort and support. You also get a good view out from the driver’s seat. The dashboard carries the same styling as the XC90 which isn’t a bad thing. Volvo has used very premium materials for the interior upholstery and it shows. The centre console houses a long storage space next to the diamond-cut engine start-stop button. The doors also get bottle holders and enough space to keep small things and the overall practicality in the cabin is good.
Talking about the features, I’ll start off with the audio system because, well, this is a Volvo and the Swede automaker has been providing top class acoustics in its cars. The Bowers & Wilkins music system sounds crisp with a variety of settings which help you find just the right balance for your personal choice. As for me, I always select the Gothenburg Hall setting which matches my liking and it sounds extremely good. You also get other features like Ambient Lighting, massage function for the seats, 360-degree view camera, Park Assist, etc. In India, the Volvo XC60 will be offered in only the Inscription D5 trim which means you get all the bells and whistles. Volvo XC60 Engine
Under the muscular hood of the XC90 rests Volvo’s 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel motor that makes a solid 235bhp and 480Nm of torque. Thanks to the class-leading output, the XC60 feels brisk from the word go. On part throttle, the car is quick to react both in the city and at higher speeds thanks to the flat torque spread and a quick 8-speed automatic. If anything, this engine behaves its best on part throttle wherein it can ride the wave of torque and allow the gearbox to upshift early. The midrange pull is particularly strong and even at the top-end, this motor remains composed. The overall refinement levels, in fact, are quite high with little in terms of engine and road noise entering the cabin at normal speeds.
The highlight of the XC60’s running gear is the electronically controlled air suspension with adaptive dampers. It not only constantly adapts to the road conditions but offers a whole lot more. For instance, it will keep the car at a constant height and level, irrespective of the passenger or luggage load. What’s more, when the engine is turned off, it will lower the car by 40mm for easy exit or entry. Finally, it will lower the car to its lowest setting at high speeds for better stability and increase the ground clearance by up to 40mm in Off-Road driving mode. Speaking of driving modes, the XC60 has five of them – Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-Road and Individual. Unsurprisingly, the Volvo feels the calmest in Eco, with its throttle response feeling mushy and the gearbox upshifting early. Switch to Dynamic and you get a steering that’s noticeably heavier and a gearbox that hangs onto lower gears and upshifts over 4,500rpm. That being said, we found the XC60 to be the most intuitive in Individual mode as it allows the driver to alter the steering, gearbox, brakes and the suspension separately to suit their mood.
Volvo XC60 Driving
The Volvo XC60 feels very stable no matter what type of road you’re driving it on. It never feels out of composure and instils a lot of confidence in the driver. The steering is fairly light at low speeds and weighs up very well. The suspension is tuned to provide a comfortable ride to passengers and the large tyres also do a good job of absorbing bumps. The XC60 comes with specially-designed Michelin tyres and the compound of these tyres is made specially for Volvo and the sidewalls even have an exclusive engraving.
In Comfort mode, the XC60 feels very relaxed to drive with the steering not feeling very heavy and the suspension having a softer setup. Body roll is a bit noticeable in this mode. When you shift to Dynamic mode, the steering feels way more heavier, the suspension gets firmer and the car overall feels so much more agile and tighter with reduced body roll too. You also get an Off-Road mode which increases the ride height of the car by 1.5-inches allowing it to pass over off-road terrain without scraping the underbelly.
Volvo XC60 Safety
So, as you would expect, the new XC60 gets Volvo’s City Safety suite of driver assistance features, but this time around, Volvo has upped the ante a bit. Now, in addition to the auto brake function at speeds of 30 mph and lower, the new XC60 will also get oncoming lane mitigation and steer assist, the latter of which is used to correct your trajectory path if you cross into oncoming traffic and don’t react when a collision is imminent. And, Volvo’s blind spot system uses the same function to help pull you back into your lane if you don’t notice that there’s a car in your blind spot. One option safety feature is Volvo’s Pilot Assist which is basically a semi-autonomous assistance system that will take car of steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads as long as you’re going 80 mph or less – think of this as something similar to active cruise control or early iterations of Tesla AutoPilot system.

Volvo XC60 Conclusion
Volvo is an underdog in the Indian luxury 4-wheeler market. The company makes such brilliant pieces of engineering that it is a bit unfortunate that Indian buyers are only obsessed with German offerings in these segments. While nothing in this world is perfect, there are some things which are close to perfection. The 2018 Volvo XC60 is one of those cars which is hard to fault and the only thing which loses brownie points is the limited leg-space at the rear. If you want a powerful luxury SUV that isn’t too large in size but offers good driving pleasure, intricate details and mind-numbing features, the Volvo XC60 is definitely the one to go for.
