Hyundai had first launched the original i20 in India back in 2008, following which it received a facelift in 2012. The new Elite i20 was then introduced in 2014 which topped the sales charts in this premium hatchback segment. This is a segment where car prices almost match their compact sedan siblings, and yet are getting popular. Yet, the Elite i20’s popularity soared so much that it crossed the one-lakh units sold landmark within a year. Now, the carmaker has given this model a midlife facelift to keep abreast with its competitors. Will this refresh help the model, which draws a strong response from the public, to continue to be in the top 10 of the sales chart every month? Hyundai Elite i20 Style
The Elite i20 gets a cascading grille with curved edges now while the front bumper gets a minor restyle. The fog lamps are a bit smaller in size while the Sportz and Asta trims get LED DRLs near the fog lamps. The Asta (O), however, gets DRLs inside the headlamp housing. The car comes with new 16-inch alloy wheels on the Asta (O) trim while the regular Asta gets 15-inch gunmetal alloys. The lower variants get steel rims. The side profile doesn’t have any changes but at the rear, the tail-gate and bumper have been redesigned and the number plate is now placed on the tail-gate instead of the bumper. The tail lamps also get new graphics while the bumper gets a black insert.

Why fix something good that isn’t broken, right? So the interior layout and design of an ergonomic and practical cabin remains the same. The quality of parts is impressive even if the dual tone dash is something I am not fond of. We would have loved to see leather seats, but the updated i20 gets black and beige coloured fabric for the otherwise comfortable seats.There are new switches on the steering wheel reiterating the great fit and finish along with functionality. Adjustable driver’s seat, a good frontal visibility, clear and functional instrument cluster and comfortable seats made sure I was in the driving seat for hours. The second row passengers will be happy too with supportive seats, good view of surroundings, great space and air-con vents to keep circulating air.
Speaking of the features, the Elite i20 has always been the benchmark in this segment and continues to do so. The top-spec Asta (O) here is well specced with an easy-to-use AVN system that comes with complete in-car entertainment and the usual connectivity features. Sat-nav is optional, but Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror link is now standard. It comes paired to a rear view camera with guidelines that add to the convenience. This also reminds me of the practical keyless entry, push button start, automatic climate control, tailgate opener with remote etc. that add to the ease.
Also, all cars in this segment get a USB charging port, but the i20 gets a fast charging one. Clearly, Hyundai has wanted to be a step ahead of competitors. Even in terms of safety, there’s ABS on all trims with the top-spec getting six airbags adding to the safety net. Boot space remains unchanged with an acceptable 285 litres, which can be extended to 1,042 litres with the entire rear seat folded down.
Hyundai Elite i20 Engine
There are no mechanical changes under the hood the 2017 Elite i20 continues with the same 1.2 Litre petrol engine which is capable of producing about 81.3 BHP of peak power and 115 Nm of torque. The top end models get the slightly more powerful 1.4 Litre unit which is capable of producing about 99 BHP of peak power and 132 Nm of torque. The only diesel option, on the other hand, continues with the same 1.4 Litre unit capable of producing about 88.7 BHP of peak power and 220 Nm of torque.
The petrol engine has decent drivability. It likes to be revved and while performance in the city is very good thanks to the responsive low-end, the engine feels slightly out of breath on the highways, especially when you need to downshift a gear or two to overtake someone. However, the 5-speed manual gearbox is butter-smooth and the clutch is also very light, which again makes driving this car an easy affair. Hyundai has dropped the 1.4-litre petrol engine with the automatic gearbox from the line-up but the existing 1.2-litre engine is all set to get a CVT gearbox soon. The diesel engine is a 1.4-litre CRDI unit that churns out 90 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 220 Nm of torque between 1500-2750 RPM. This engine gets a 6-speed manual gearbox which is again slick and slots well. The engine is very refined and is easily the segment benchmark in terms of NVH. Low-end driveability is good and post 1500 RPM, the punch starts getting stronger. Even out on the highways, the diesel car performs well and the engine doesn’t feel strained even at speeds above the ton. Within the city, expect the i20 to return about 15 km/l while on the highways, the car will easily deliver 17-18 km/l.
Hyundai Elite i20 Driving
Now on to the ride and handling department. The Elite i20’s steering drew a lot of flak earlier and the Koreans still need to work on this. The Elite i20 still doesn’t make for driver focused and most connected car. Though the steering is light it isn’t direct and still vague at the centre. The brakes too aren’t progressive and the late brake bite doesn’t instil confidence in hard braking. On the plus side, the Elite i20 has a sorted ride especially at slow speeds. The well-tuned suspension will absorb bumps and sharp potholes with ease.
There’s no clatter from any body part and so poor roads are not an issue at all. However, as you throw the car into a corner you realise the body roll come into the picture. It doesn’t feel very agile and responsive around these bends. Also, built up some speed and the car still tends to wallow a bit. Nonetheless, this up and down movement has considerably improved over the old model. In any case, the car feels planted and smooth to drive.
Hyundai Elite i20 Safety
Hyundai has incorporated a decent braking system in the hatch, which consists of disc brakes on the front and drum brakes on the rear. It is supported immensely well by the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), but that is limited to the top three variants. Earlier, Hyundai i20 used to be the only hatchback under Rs. 10 lakh that offered as many as half a dozen airbags and was impeccably safe. But, now the scenario has reversed as even the top-end trim has only 2 airbags. The base and mid variants don’t feature a single airbag, while the Sportz trim comprises of only driver’s airbag. The parking assist feature with reverse parking sensors and rear camera with ECM display comes handy during parking the hatch. There are front fog lamps to improve visibility in inclement weather conditions.
But, again, both the aforesaid features are with Sportz and Asta trims. Additionally, the top-end trim also features seat belt pretensioners for the driver and front passenger, automatic headlamps, impact-sensing auto door unlock and clutch lock. On the security front, it has immobilizer, smart keyless entry, and central locking (door and tailgate) to endure any event of burglary or thievery. It can be propounded nonchalantly that the current gen Elite i20 stands nowhere close to its predecessor in terms of safety features. The company has disappointed thoroughly in the safety and security aspect.

Hyundai Elite i20 Conclusion
The Hyundai Elite i20 with all these changes surely can compete easily with some of its potential rivals like the Maruti Baleno and the Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo in the Indian market. The changes to the exterior and interior are limited to cosmetics, but that does not take the light away from the fact that the i20 is considered as one of the bestsellers of the Indian auto market.
